KALTENBORN, H. V. (1878–1965). Hans von Kaltenborn was a journalist on the Brooklyn Eagle when he debuted on radio in 1922. In 1924, he became a weekly commentator and in 1930, at age 52, he turned to full-time radio newscasting on CBS. On his Current Events program, he covered many political events, including national elections. He then went to NBC and covered similar assignments on his weekly Kaltenborn Edits the News, which aired from 1930 to 1955. Harvard-educated, well-traveled, and speaking fluent German and French, Kaltenborn interviewed many world leaders in their native languages. In 1936, he covered the Spanish Civil War at his own expense and made a famous broadcast by shortwave from within a battle. During the 20 days of the Munich crisis in 1938, he made 102 broadcasts. Kaltenborn helped organize the Association of Radio News Analysts as well as the Radio Pioneers. He was considered by many experts to have been both the best-known and the most widely respected news commentator of the 1930s and 1940s. At least one authority called him “the personification of the American radio commentator.” From 1948 to 1950, he was on NBC’s Who Said That?, a 30-minute program on which a panel of experts answered questions based on a current news event. He wrote several books during his lifetime, including the autobiographical Fifty Fabulous Years, published in 1950. See also NEWS PROGRAMS.
KALTENMEYER’S KINDERGARTEN. A 30-minute comedy program heard from 1933 to 1940, Kaltenmeyer’s Kindergarten was set in “The Nonsense School of the Air,” with Bruce Kamman as Professor August Kaltenmeyer, D.U.N. (Doctor of Utter Nonsense). Jim and Marian Jordan were members of the cast, as were Harold Peary and Isabel Randolph; all four of them left in 1936 to appear on Fibber McGee and Molly. In 1940, the title of the program was changed to Kindergarten Kapers, with the lead character’s name changed to Ulysses S. Applegate (U.S.A.), because of anti-German sentiment in the nation leading up to World War II.
KATE SMITH HOUR (THE). Kate Smith was a vocalist who was one of the biggest stars of radio, headlining a long series of music programs in 15-minute, 30-minute, and 60-minute formats from 1930 to 1958. Her programs appeared under many titles, although unlike many other stars, almost all of the programs on which she appeared had titles that included her name: Kate Smith Sings, The Kate Smith Matinee, The Kate Smith New Car Review, The Kate Smith Hour, The Kate Smith A&P Bandwagon, etc. She also hosted a long-running daytime talk program, Kate Smith Speaks, on which she and her manager Ted Collins chatted about current events, as well as talk shows titled Kate Smith’s Column and Speaking Her Mind. A large woman, she had a powerful voice and was noted for having introduced Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America” in 1938. She had exclusive rights to the song for several years and made it one of the most famous songs in America. She was
